NAME: Gilbert Nightray
FANDOM: Pandora Hearts
TIMELINE: Right after he was injured and fell over the railing of the staircase in Cheshire’s world, separating him and Oz.
AGE: 24
GENDER: Male

SPECIAL ABILITIES/STRENGTHS/POWERS: When it comes to physical strength Gil has it, as well as a good deal of mental being able to endure a lot in his life.
The Raven Chain, which it has the ability to suppress other chains and can also it can transport people distances/places but it causes an extreme wear on the user.
Aside from the Chain, which is mainly used to suppress and transport, Gilbert is gifted shooter using his weapon of choice the pistol. Having practiced with since he was young he has been able to refine his skills and now carries the weapons with him everywhere.

PERSONALITY:

As far as personality is the younger Gilbert is only slightly different from the older Gil. As a child if you described him as a cry baby you would be spot on. Though most of the time his tears were for Oz. With the years of constant teasing from his master he still cried, but he was able to laugh and show his emotions freely. As a child he was carefree, innocent, and happy to live serving his young master.

When Oz was taken into the Abyss Gilbert view on his life had changed. The ten years Oz was trapped there really changed the young boy into the man he is now. Gil felt guilt, pain, and lost in his mix of emotions he shut himself off from it. On the outside in order to protect himself over the years Gilbert built a very tough outer layer to himself. He refused to show any sign of weakness or vulnerability, if he showed any at all he could be easily hurt and after Oz he didn’t want that to ever happen again. Around the time he tamed his chain he adopted the name Raven, his old name bringing too many bad memories that he wished to leave with his old self.

In both the anime and the manga, he goes through a great range of emotions though he tries his best to hide them. Many people see Gil as an extremely strong person; but everyone has their breaking points even Gilbert. One of the big ones is to see his master, Oz in pain. Ever since he was a child he has had an obsession for the buy (as well as Jack.) It is close to a borderline unhealthy need and want for the boy, Break was one of the first to point it out to him even before Oz escaped the Abyss. He tries to hide his possessiveness for Oz, but has fallen short of hiding it.

Another part of Gil is when he says he “doesn’t care” on certain topics he, it is normally the opposite of how he really feels. His mind is always going over different thoughts that seem to eat him, though he hides it or tires to. Vincent knows this fact well from knowing each other for years and spending a good deal of time together. Another fact is when he is around Oz he returns to how he was when he was younger slightly, and he is still easily teased but other, especially Oz and Break. This is greatly increased when he is drunk, not being able to hold his liquor at all he reverts back to a child.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY: As far as Gilbert can remember his young life started when he showed up at the Bezarius household. Before that he had no memories of what had happened to him. Upon arriving at the household he met the young master Oz and was told he would be the boy’s servant from then on. Not long after meeting Oz, Gilbert devotes his life to serving the young master and for a few years that was his life. Even though Oz adored teasing and poking at the young, cry baby Gil, he could never bring himself to resent his master. It became the opposite. When Oz’s own father said Oz was filthy and better off to have never been born, Gilbert became extremely loyal to Oz to the point he would sacrifice his own life to protect the boy.

Time went by and besides the normal torturing from the blonde, everything was fine. That is until the Young Master’s fifteenth birthday, as a custom when you became fifteen you had to go through a ceremony to become an adult. That day was the day they discovered the grave. Gilbert and Oz fell through the ground and there was the grave and the pocket watch, but neither of them knew how this pocket watch would change their young lives. As Gil tried to read the faded gravestone Oz picked up the pocket watch and entered a trance. Little did Gil know that Oz was having a vision and this was the first time he met Alice.

Oz decided to take the watch to have his uncle look at the watch but when they returned to the Bezarius estate for the coming of age ceremony. The young Master asked for Gilbert to participate in the ceremony, at first Gil turned him down feeling he did not have the right to be in it but then he agreed. Then Oz and his sister, Ada, left to finish a few things leaving Gilbert alone to think on what he had agreed to. Though he wasn’t alone for long be for he found himself at the mercy of a woman a split personality named Zwei, who used her chain (Doldam) that could immobilize and control its victims body with strings, strings that were used to control the young boy. That night at Oz’s ceremony Gil appeared only he was being controlled now and could do nothing to stop that. As the ceremony came to an end Oz had to place his hand on the old clock that had not rung in a hundred years. Right as Oz placed his hand, and began to vowel the eerie bong of the clock filled the entire building. Then time stood still as a group of red cloaked intrudes appeared around the young master and Gil grabbed the boy from behind before he could react. Under the control of Zwei Gil stabbed a dagger into his friend’s shoulder, with a insane smile he began to say how delicious the boy’s blood smelled. As he was about to stab Oz again the chain “B-rabbit” appeared, it began to fight off the cloaked people. The caused enough commotion that Gil was able to snap out of it, Gil asked the leader why Oz deserved this. As the lightning struck he saw his face and recognized this person. In Oz’s panic he feared Gil was in danger and picked up the sword intending to slash the leader, but instead he slashed Gilbert across the chest as the boy jumped in front of the man. On the floor Gil laid there helplessly as his master and friend is plunged into the abyss, then he passed out.

When he woke, Oz was gone hurt and saddened beyond all belief as he’d lost him and was completely at a loss of what to do now. Then he met the strange man, Xerxes Break. Break expressed to Gil how he was someone that could be of use to the boy and that he Nightray family had interest in adopting him. Wary of trusting the stranger, it wasn’t until he mentioned he could help save Oz. With the utmost obedience he did as the man asked. Break then goes on to tell him that the Nightray also took in a boy name Vincent, who claimed to be his brother. It came as a shock to hear this news as well as well as fearful. He had never been good at meeting new people and because Vincent knew him it made him all the more fearful.

Even though he was fearful, Gil agreed to contract and tame the chain know as the Raven as part of the agreement with Break to save his master. As a teenage he was able to both contracts and tames this chain and thus took the name Raven, his old name carrying too much pain attached to it. Raven being the strong side of him, hating to show weakness to anyone. He continues to work with Break, as well as the organization Pandora, who Break also works with.

Soon 10 years pass, all the while they work to find a chance they can save Oz from the Abyss. But before they can use their plan Oz comes back after making a contract with the chain B-Rabbit, who also calls herself Alice. To say Raven was shocked to see Oz got so far was an understatement, considering he, Break, and the girl named Sharon Rainsworth were about to come for him. Soon after this Alice uses Oz’s body to show herself, Break quickly pushes her out with his cane, Raven then seals her power. Oz steps up to save the Chain, then out of the pocket watch appears a chain. This forced him to unseal Alice’s power so she can defeat the chain, after the fight they all get a look at one of Alice’s lost memories. Break then ask the two of them to join Pandora and help them, in return they will help Alice regain her memories.

Soon they are sent on their first mission they in counter their first illegal chain. It is then that Raven tells Oz the fate of all illegal contractors. Once the clock on their chest makes one full rotation, they are dragged into the deepest and dark level of the abyss to never escape again. He goes on to tell them this is what will happen to them as well if they can’t find her lost memories.

On their second mission they had to Oz’s old mansion there a member of the Baskervilles, the ones who dragged Oz into the Abyss, capture Gil in her Chain’s strings, forcing him to attack Oz pointing a gun to the smaller boys head. Oz grabs the gun moving it under his chin and says he would rather die before he sees Gil betray him. Gil gains control back to his body and shoots the enemy injuring them causing them to withdraw. During this Oz for the first time since he was back is able to realize Raven is Gilbert his servant from 10 years ago.

Gilbert runs away after this confrontation and goes to the grave they found years before. There Oz finds him and they are able to talk about what had happened. Oz tells him he still wants him by his side as his servant, that even though he has changed he’s still the same Gil. The stronger Gil then vows to be his by his side once again, their bond even stronger now.
Then they get yet another look at one of Alice’s memories only this one turns into a twisted world and they meet a small stuffed white-rabbit. The rabbit talks and Oz soon takes it into his hand and gives it a coded message before he shoots it in the head, with one of Gil’s guns that he let his master hold on to.

After this memory they head back to Gil’s house to rest. It’s there that Break shows up and they had a brief conversation, before Oz meets a girl on that gives him a letter for Gil. Oz goes back inside and hands the letter to him. Gilbert obviously knows who it’s from but doesn’t say anything else about it not wanting to worry them. Alice then says how she is hungry and they head off to the market to get ingredients for food. At the market Gil tries to have a talk with his young master, while Alice runs off saying she wants meat. They are able to have a small talk before he places his hat on Oz’s head and tells him to hold onto it until he returns, Gil then runs after to take care of Alice. He ends up having to buy food instead and they then talk, where in the end he gets made and tells the rabbit to never mention parents around Oz. The subject is painful for his master and if it can be avoided he would make sure it was.

Since Alice wouldn’t let it go he explains to her how it was his own fault that Oz found out his father hated him. So much that the man told his own son he was filthy and to never touch him. Oz had told him it wasn’t his fault, but he still felt like it was even if his master said it wasn’t, this left Alice with knowing it as well. Soon another chain appears, getting ready to fight they realize the one critical person they need for Alice to fight is not here. With no other option they turn and run to go find Oz.

Running from the chain they soon run into Oz and a girl named Echo, with the chain and its contractor close behind. Echo attacks the chain knocking it back but the force of the attack causes the bridge Oz is standing on to crumble. Gil manages to grab him and unseal Alice and is knocked out in the process, when he awakes he sees the contractor has a gone to Oz’s head.
Quickly he draws his own gun pointing it at the man, only to hear Oz scream not to shoot him. Then a bullet hits the man in the head and easily kills him. The shock causes Alice’s power to surge through Oz causing him a good deal of pain. Gilbert rushes to seal the power all the while swearing it wasn’t him who killed the man. Then from the alleyway a man with blonde hair and bi-colored eyes, a man steps out. The man says he is the one who shot the bullet. Learning this they return to the mansion with the man to warm up after the fight.

At the mansion he tells Oz the man is his little brother, he goes on to tell him all that had happened since he was in the Abyss. How he met Break, his contract with the raven chain and all he had done to try to help Oz escape the Abyss.

The day was far more relaxed than the others now. Until Gilbert realizes he had forgotten his hat and drags Alice and Oz out with him to find it. He finds it thought it results in them getting into an arm-wrestling contest, winners take the hat. Oz uses his almost terrifying skills to win the first match, when the second one comes to Gil against a woman Oz’s Uncle Oscar Bezarius steps in. This is a man Gil had always looked up to making it difficult to do anything against him, with a few kind words Oscar wins leaving the result in a tie then it was Alice’s turn. Though the Rabbit had forgotten her powers were sealed, but in the let second Gilbert fixes that releasing her for a few short minutes, he really wants his hat back.

The win, Gilbert gets his hat back Oz, him and, Oz’s uncle have a little reunion together after they leave the defeated thieves. It isn’t long before that they find that Alice is missing, searching they see that Alice and Break have been taken to somewhere else. Upon returning to the mansion they learn from Sharon that they have been taken to the Abyss, to the dimension of the Cheshire cat. Sharon uses her chain to open the portal that leads to the two of them, Oz agrees. Gil tries to protest the young master going but in the end is defeated and they both go into the dimension.
There, Sharon explains to them through her chain that they’re in Cheshire’s dimension and that she was separated from Break, this could only mean that something had happened to him. That’s when Cheshire reveals himself the chain, like Alice, has a human like form though he is also very cat-like. Even though the chain is dangerous Gil freezes, his phobia of cats still hasn’t vanished even ten years later. This means Oz has to pull him away from Cheshire’s attack so he wouldn’t be hurt. As a distraction Sharon sends out her chain Eques to distance the cat so they can both get away.

Searching for Alice it isn’t long before they run into a twisted version of the girl, Gil shoots the girl knowing it is a fake. Soon the cat-like chain catches up with them and explains this place was created from Alice’s lost memories and that she said she didn’t want them back. Right as Gil’s about to release the Raven to fight Cheshire but he gets distracted and this was a mistake. Cheshire jumps at him and slashes at his chest sending him falling over the staircase railing to the ground.
WORLD/UNIVERSE: Pandora Hearts is set during the Victorian era. So the sight of people in elegant dresses and clothing in horse drawn carriages isn’t out of the normal. The only thing that is not normal for this time is the Chains and illegal contractors, those who make an agreement with these chains. Chains are creatures born of the Abyss which is in a different dimension of their normal ones. Most of the times they are unpleasant to look at but people make contracts with them with the hope they can change their past. Pandora’s job is to get rid of these illegal contractors and chains.

WHY THIS CHARACTER/THIS GAME?: The Asylum in many way could be compared to the Abyss. It is in another dimension, has the ability to change so one thing Gilbert knows about is the Abyss. He is also very adaptable and will be able to handle the sudden change he will just continue to think he is trapped in the Abyss.

THIRD PERSON:
This place was strange. Maybe not in the way the normal Abyss was and that is what had been throwing him off. No weapons. No chains that he had seen anyway. Not to mention lots of people he had never seen before and didn't appear to be chains or even know what they were.

He covered his face with his hat. Thinking too much had always robbed him of his sleep and it seemed it would once again. Gilbert lay on his back on the bed, golden eyes staring into the hat Ada gave him. If they took his weapons at least they didn't get this.

Shifting to his side he looked to the other bed. Alone. He hated it. Oz was with that Break...and Alice was somewhere else all together. With a light sigh he set his hat on the nightstand and sat up on his bed. Is Oz up? It was late...but he was still uneasy about his master being in another room.

Maybe he would just check on him...just to make sure he was okay. Too bad he soon knew that he wasn't. As he stood from the bed a familiar pain returned to him. In a quick motion he grabbed his hand the burning and pain now in it.

But why was this happening? Then it crossed his mind...their abilities...they were back which meant...Master Oz! Gil placed the pain in the back of his mind and ran out of his not worrying to shut the door or grab his hat. All that mattered was getting to his Master.

FIRST PERSON:

… Where am I? Is this still Cheshire’s world or another part of the Abyss?

I didn’t fall that far did I?

Last thing I remembered … That’s right, Oz!

I need to find him I left him alone with Cheshire but … Where are my pistols?!

I know I didn’t drop them!? … did I?
